The Celtic Clan - Skills Units

Skills Units from Forester to Warrior

As a Celtic Clan member you will complete the skills units to reach the next level of Celtic Society. Each level will include Archery, Survival and Heritage Skills Units including 6 hours tuition by qualified instructors and experienced craft people for each skill.

Society Level 1. Forester

In Celtic times woodlands were carefully managed to provide mature trees for building. Other trees were cut to the ground (coppicing) to produce long straight rods that could be used for wattle fencing and fuel. Logs were burnt at high temperatures in an earth kiln to make charcoal.

Skills Units to become a Forester

Introduction to Archery

A session introducing the ancient art of longbow archery, its history, purpose and manufacture. You will learn how to string a long bow and the techniques of firing will be introduced as you shoot targets at 10 yards.

Introduction to Survival

Learn how to build a fire, use a knife safely to make a skewer and cook your lunch!

Working with Wood

learn the many different uses of wood and make wooden tools including an introduction to the pole lathe.

Society Level 2. Hunter

In ancient times wild animals such as wolves and wild boar roamed through the forests of Britain. Brave hunters tracked and killed these dangerous animals along with roe deer and rabbits. Little was wasted; animal hides would be made into leather, fur used for winter clothing and animal bones would be made into tools.

Skills Units to become a Hunter

Target Archery & Field Archery

Developing your archery skills and improving your techniques both in straight target shooting and in roaming field archery, shooting 3D targets throughout the woodland. After completing this course you will have the opportunity to join the Celtic Harmony Archery Club and become registered with the National Field Archery Society (NFSA).

Woodland and cooking survival

Food for free – identify and gather edible plants from the woodland and then build an outdoor oven in which to cook your food!

Shelter Building, Flint Knapping & Friction Fire Making

Level 3. Crafts Person

Arts and crafts that developed in ancient Celtic times are still fashionable today. The unique style of complex pattern work including; spirals, interlacing patterns, knot work, animal forms, animal zoomorphics, and colour. The Celts also produced some of the finest prehistoric metal work ever to be seen in the British isles. Native bronze and goldsmiths were producing extremely high quality items and particularly extravagant pieces of jewellery were created.

Skills Units to become a Crafts Person:

Archery Tournament

Put your archery skills to the test in a great competition. Including archery games and field archery shoots.

Survival: Rope Making

Rope is an essential building material and has many important uses. Learn traditional methods of making rope from rushes, elm bark, nettles and bramble.

Heritage: Leather Working

Tanning hide to make leather and then manufacturing a tool pouch from it.

Society Level 4. Warrior

Celtic warriors were wild men and women who fought in battle painted from head to toe with spirals of blue woad dye. they believed that their gods would decide if they were to live or die so felt no need to wear armour! The greatest prize from battle was an enemy’s severed head to decorate your door!

Skills Units to become a Warrior:

Arrow making

Learn how to make your own arrows, used in battle and hunting wild boar.

Survival: Animal Tracking

Learn several ways to track small mammals and different trapping techniques

Heritage: Storytelling

Celtic people had a strong tradition of oral storytelling. Listen to the adventures of the Fianna Warrior Tribe so that you can boost your own Warrior Feats!

Summer Camp - 24-26 July 2008

An Exciting Residential Camp! The clan will build their own shelter in the woodland and enjoy the following activities:

Survival: Shelters

Build a shelter from the natural resources of the woodland to protect yourself from the elements and wild beasts, and to hide from ruthless enemy clans!

Heritage: Flint Knapping

Learning the ancient art of flint knapping, used by the ancients to create many useful tools and weaponry such as arrowheads, axes and daggers.

Heritage: Friction Fire Making

Fire is essential for cooking your food, keeping you warm and casting metal. Learn seven methods of making a fire without matches and the importance of fire for the Celtic people.
