Forest School programme
Experience the Rewards of Play-Based Learning for children from 3-7 yrs
Alex Taylor, Head Teacher, explains:
'The decision to give the children attending Birchwood Children's Centre the experience of learning in a very different environment 'The Forest' was probably one of the most rewarding experiences for children and staff alike.
The Celtic Harmony and school staff prepared the parents well, allaying any 'Health and Safety' concerns, staffing ratios were addressed by flexibility and total commitment from all staff and governors. To cover the cost the Bursar dug deep into the school budget and for six consecutive Mondays we travelled to Brickendon by coach.
The relationships built between the children and Celtic Harmony staff, were key to the children's learning - feeling safe, secure and able to take risks. The planned learning activities built upon the children's experiences from the week before, boundaries were set from the beginning, the children's confidence and self-esteem increased equally.
How many four year olds have the opportunity to work together to build a campfire, use appropriate tools to make skewers from twigs, to toast marshmallows, eat them and finally extinguish the fire? The learning doesn't get better than that.
The increased confidence for the children was carried back to school, their willingness to attempt new challenges independently and the ability to work collaboratively were particular benefits. We will now ensure that every child who attends Birchwood Children's Centre will have this unique and wonderful learning opportunity.'
